In an effort to address hostile social media content in political discussions among politicians, the former member representing Tarauni Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hafizu Kawu, brought together social media users from different political parties to promote healthier political discourse.
Under the auspices of the Hafizu Kawu Media Team, in collaboration with the Council of Ulama of Nigeria, Kano State Chapter, the two-day Social Media Summit and Sensitization brought together social media users from the All Progressives Congress (APC), New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and others.
Speaking at the event, the guest lecturer, Prof. Abdallah Uba Adamu, a Professor of Communication, commended Kawu and the Council for taking steps to address this issue as the 2027 elections approach.
He condemned the misuse of social media by politicians.
“This effort will go a long way in addressing critical areas of media mishandling, especially on social media. We are delighted that the Council of Ulama is actively engaged in this important collaboration.
“Social media in itself is not harmful. But it is users who are mishandling the process. I am thrilled to see that this summit is organized to reform and promote decency in modern political practices,” Uba Adamu said.
On his part, the Chairman of the Kano Chapter of the Council of Ulama, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, urged social media users to remember they are guided by moral principles.
“That is religion. Whoever believes in the Day of Reckoning must, therefore, watch their tongue and be careful about what they post or share with the public,” he noted.
Barr. Bashir Musaddique highlighted issues of defamation of character and other legal breaches, urging politically inclined social media users to exercise caution.
“Those politicians sending you to defame people’s characters are only using you for their selfish ends. You should ask yourselves why their children are not participating in such unwanted behaviors,” he said.
