A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State and one of the founders of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Dr Adamu Dangwani, has dismissed claims that some former allies of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso betrayed the Kwankwasiyya political movement.
Dangwani said those making such allegations misunderstood the meaning and concept of betrayal.
Speaking to an online platform in Kano, he said the Kwankwasiyya movement was jointly conceived and named by a small group of politicians and intellectuals, stressing that it was not the exclusive creation of Kwankwaso.
“Whoever comes to say we betrayed Kwankwasiyya does not understand the word betrayal,” Dangwani said.
According to him, the idea and name of Kwankwasiyya were initiated by six individuals, including Salisu Buhari, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, a former minister identified as Borodo, Prof. Umar Farouk, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi and himself.
“The word Kwankwasiyya and the creation of the group were the initiative of six of us. We created it and we named it. Nobody betrayed Kwankwaso. Politics is about opinion,” he said.
Dangwani said political realignments were normal and should not be framed as acts of disloyalty, noting that disagreements also occurred even within families.
“Between father and son, it happens too, yet they still meet and respect each other. Politics is not religion. People should understand that. The issue of betrayal does not even arise. We were with Kwankwaso and we separated with many of our godfathers also in the past,” he added.
He explained that his political path differed from Kwankwaso’s when the former Kano governor decided to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) without consulting some of his close associates.
“I am not the one who left Kwankwaso. When he wanted to leave the PDP, even before he left, he didn’t tell us, especially myself. Since I was not in the picture and was not invited, I continued with my activities in the PDP,” Dangwani said.
He said their separation was not borne out of bitterness or personal disagreement, nor was it connected to the emergence of Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf as a candidate.
“It was not because of the Abba Kabir Yusuf contested. When Abba was given the ticket, I was the Director of Campaign in the PDP.
“The governor is now coming to meet with us, and we will support him and support our government,” he said.
Dangwani expressed optimism ahead of future elections, saying he was confident that the APC would secure victory in Kano State and urged residents to support the party.
“We are hopeful that the APC will win Kano, and we are calling on the people to support us,” he said.
