No fewer than 18 persons have been reportedly killed following a clash between suspected bandits and local vigilantes in Falele village, Daddara district of Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The incident, which occurred at about 1:30 pm on Tuesday, was said to have started when armed bandits invaded the community, sparking a gun battle with vigilante members.
It was gathered that 15 persons lost their lives during the attack, while three others were earlier killed when vigilantes initially engaged the bandits.
Confirming the development in a statement on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mua’zu, said the clash affected Falale and Kadobe villages in Jibia LGA.
“The Katsina State Government has confirmed that a violent clash occurred in Falale and Kadobe villages in Jibia Local Government Area on March 17, 2026.
“The incident resulted in the loss of 15 lives, but security forces have since restored order and stabilised the situation,” he said.
Mua’zu explained that the crisis began after vigilantes confronted repentant bandits, leading to casualties and a subsequent reprisal attack.
“The vigilantes from the affected villages engaged repentant bandits, resulting in casualties of three. The incident triggered a violent reprisal that claimed additional lives in the communities,” he added.
According to him, security operatives, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Civilian Watch, and community leaders, collaborated to restore calm in the area.
He noted that the joint effort helped to prevent further casualties and ensured the return of normalcy to the affected communities.
The commissioner, however, urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
“We understand the pain and loss experienced by the affected families and remain committed to ensuring justice and preventing future incidents,” he said.
He reiterated the commitment of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda to tackling insecurity and safeguarding lives and property across the state.
Mua’zu further disclosed that Jibia LGA had enjoyed relative peace for over a year due to strategic security measures, urging residents to promptly report suspicious activities.
The state government had earlier introduced an amnesty programme aimed at encouraging bandits to surrender their arms and reintegrate into society.
However, the initiative has continued to generate mixed reactions, with critics warning that such measures could embolden criminal elements and fuel further attacks.
