A retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Muhammad Husaini Gumel, has declared his intention to contest the House of Representatives seat for the Gumel/Maigatari/Gagarawa/Sule Tankarkar Federal Constituency of Jigawa State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gumel made the declaration in Gumel while speaking with selected journalists, saying he was responding to persistent calls from his constituents to represent them at the National Assembly.
He attributed his decision to what he described as the “encouragement and visible achievements” of President Bola Tinubu and Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, noting that their performance in infrastructure, social services, and human development inspired his political ambition.
According to him, the achievements of both the President and the Governor justify their re-election bids, urging Nigerians to support the APC to ensure continuity in governance.
He said despite initial challenges, the Tinubu administration has stabilised and is now better positioned to move the country forward.
The former Deputy Inspector-General of Police described his entry into the race as a turning point for the constituency, stressing the need for experienced leadership to address gaps in security, governance, and sustainable development.
Gumel, a former Commissioner of Police in Kano State, recalled introducing the Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) model, which he said contributed to restoring peace and reducing youth-related crimes in the state.
He outlined his legislative agenda to include youth empowerment, healthcare, education, women empowerment, support for persons with special needs, infrastructure development, and human capital development.
He also pledged to leverage his national and international networks to attract federal projects in roads, agriculture, education, and healthcare, as well as empowerment programmes for youths and women.
“My years in security have taught me that lasting peace is built on opportunity, dignity, and inclusion,” he said.
