Six aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have withdrawn from the race for the Kano Central senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections and endorsed former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau.
The decision followed a high-level political meeting convened by Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, in Abuja on Sunday.
Kano Times gathered that the meeting, which lasted several hours, ended with a consensus among party stakeholders to support Shekarau as a consensus aspirant for the senatorial seat.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the aspirants — Usman Bala, Sha’aban Sharada, Muhammad Zango, Danyaro Yakasai, Abbas Sani Abbas and Shehu Isa Driver — said their decision to step down was taken in the interest of unity and political stability in Kano State.
According to them, endorsing Shekarau was aimed at strengthening internal cohesion within the party and positioning the APC for victory in the 2027 elections.
Confirming the development in a Facebook post, the governor’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Salisu Kosawa, said the meeting brought together APC senatorial aspirants for Kano Central, where they unanimously agreed to back Shekarau.
“He led a meeting with candidates contesting the Kano Central senatorial seat under the APC platform and they resolved to support Malam Ibrahim Shekarau,” Kosawa stated.
Shekarau recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in April.
The former governor announced his defection at his residence in Kano alongside PDP chieftain, Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, during a gathering attended by supporters and political associates.
Addressing the gathering, Shekarau said the move followed extensive consultations and careful evaluation of political developments, adding that those present unanimously endorsed the decision.
Shekarau served as governor of Kano State between 2003 and 2011 and later held office as Nigeria’s Minister of Education from 2014 to 2015.
