Former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, has lost his bid to return to the National Assembly after suffering defeat in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary for Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency in Kano State.
Kano Times reports that the incumbent lawmaker, Yusuf Ahmad Badau, emerged victorious in the keenly contested primary election.
The APC State Public Relations Officer, Auwalu Soja, disclosed this in a recorded voice message made available to journalists in Kano.
According to him, the party adopted consensus arrangements in 20 federal constituencies across the state, while four constituencies proceeded to primary elections after some aspirants declined to step down.
“So far, 20 contestants agreed on consensus arrangements, while only four constituencies went into primary elections,” Soja said.
He explained that in Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency, Badau defeated Lawan in what observers described as one of the most closely watched contests of the exercise.
Soja added that the consensus arrangement enabled most serving lawmakers to secure return tickets without contest.
Among those returned through consensus are House leaders Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Abubakar Kabir Bichi, and Abdulmumin Jibrin.
He further revealed that Hamisu Chidari secured the party’s ticket for a third term in Dambatta Federal Constituency, while Mustapha Bala Maigidan Ruwa clinched the ticket for Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency.
In Madobi/Garun Mallam Federal Constituency, Sulaiman Mukthar Ishaq also emerged as the party’s candidate.
Soja noted that the primary elections were conducted peacefully across the state without any major security breach.
“The exercise was conducted in a mature and peaceful manner. There was no security challenge throughout the process,” he stated.
