The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Monday, May 18, 2026, as the first day of Dhul Hijjah 1447 After Hijrah (AH), following the sighting of the crescent moon.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Wali Junaidu, on behalf of the Sultanate Council.
According to the statement, the successful sighting of the moon signals the commencement of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, regarded as one of the holiest periods in Islam.
The council explained that the sacred month coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage and the celebration of Eid-el-Adha observed by Muslims worldwide.
It added that with the declaration, Muslims across Nigeria are expected to begin preparations for the religious rites associated with Zulhijja, including Eid-el-Adha, which is anticipated to fall on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, corresponding to the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, subject to confirmation.
The Sultanate Council urged the Muslim Ummah to utilise the period for prayers, reflection and renewed devotion, while seeking peace, unity and national prosperity.
It also advised the public to rely only on official announcements from the Sultanate Council and recognised Islamic authorities for information regarding the observance of the season.
