FIFA has announced that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will become the first edition of the tournament to provide sign language interpretation broadcasts for every match, in a move aimed at improving accessibility for fans with disabilities.
The world football governing body disclosed this in a statement published on its official website on Friday.
According to FIFA, the initiative is part of efforts to ensure that supporters with disabilities enjoy the tournament experience both inside stadiums and while watching remotely.
“FIFA is dedicated to making sure that all fans, including those with disabilities and their families and friends, have an excellent experience at this year’s FIFA World Cup,” the statement said.
FIFA explained that the accessibility package for the 2026 World Cup expands on measures introduced during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, including sensory bags and audio-descriptive commentary services.
The body added that additional accessibility tools such as tactile boards and enhanced sensory support services would also be introduced for the tournament.
Highlighting the sign language feature, FIFA said the broadcasts would provide more than basic interpretation for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing supporters.
“Sign language commentary goes beyond standard interpretation. It provides an immersive experience for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing fans by translating the full energy of the game,” FIFA stated.
The organisation said interpreters would relay not only match events but also emotional and environmental details, including crowd reactions, referee whistles and changes in stadium atmosphere.
FIFA further revealed that matches hosted in the United States and Canada would use American Sign Language, ASL, while games in Mexico would feature Mexican Sign Language, LSM.
It added that during the knockout stages, ASL would be used for most matches, while LSM would be available for selected fixtures involving Spanish-speaking teams.
According to FIFA, fans can access the service through the official World Cup app by selecting a stadium, opening the “Accessibility Services” section and activating the “Sign Language” option for a dedicated live feed.
The football governing body noted that the initiative reflects its commitment to making the World Cup more inclusive and accessible to a global audience.
