The management of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil, has cancelled a proposed students’ excursion to New Bussa in Niger State over security concerns raised by parents and other stakeholders.
The university said the decision was taken by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Musa Tukur Yakasai, following reports on the security situation in the area proposed for the eight-week mandatory field exercise for Level 400 Fisheries students.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Affairs, Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the Vice Chancellor had earlier rejected the proposed trip due to insecurity concerns before public reactions intensified.
“When the idea of going to New Bussa came up, the Vice Chancellor, who was already aware of the security situation in the area, had long ago rejected the trip,” the statement said.
The university disclosed that the Vice Chancellor subsequently directed the Department of Fisheries to look for a safer alternative venue for the exercise.
It added that Tiga Dam in Kano State has now been approved for the mandatory field exercise.
“The students are now going to Tiga Dam in Kano for the mandatory exercise,” the statement added.
The institution stressed that the safety and welfare of students remain a top priority of management both on and off campus.
“The university management never jokes with students’ safety and welfare on and off campus,” Abdullahi stated.
He also assured parents and guardians that there was no plan to take students to any unsafe location.
“There are no plans to take our students to New Bussa or any other insecure areas for any activity,” he added.
Kano Times reports that some parents reportedly opposed the planned trip involving more than 30 students to Niger State over security concerns in the area.
