French philosopher, sociologist and World War II Resistance member, Edgar Morin, has died at the age of 104.
His wife, Sabah Abouessalam Morin, announced his death on Saturday, saying he remained committed to addressing global issues and human concerns until his final days.
“Today, the void he leaves behind is immense. But his courage, his loyalty to people and to ideas, his moral rigor and his hope continue to accompany us,” she said in a statement.
Born Edgar Nahoum in Paris on July 8, 1921, to Jewish immigrant parents from Greece, Morin became one of France’s most influential intellectuals, known for promoting critical thinking, fighting intolerance and advocating a multidisciplinary approach to understanding humanity.
He gained international recognition for co-creating the documentary Chronicle of a Summer with filmmaker Jean Rouch in 1961, a pioneering work that helped shape modern documentary filmmaking.
Morin, who described himself as a “humanologist,” wrote dozens of books on subjects ranging from globalisation and environmental challenges to nationalism and human identity.
A former member of the French Resistance against Nazi occupation, he remained an influential voice in public debates well into his later years. His final book was published in 2025.
In 2021, Emmanuel Macron honoured him on his 100th birthday, recognising his contributions to French and global intellectual life.
