The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano Zone, has urged the Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa State governments to immediately implement the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and the union in their state-owned universities.
Speaking at a press conference in Kano on Wednesday, the Zonal Coordinator, Abdulrazaq Ibrahim, warned that failure to implement the agreement could disrupt industrial harmony and academic activities.
He acknowledged the Federal Government’s release of funds to settle outstanding allowances in federal universities but lamented that state-owned universities in the zone were yet to domesticate or implement the agreement.
“While we acknowledge this progress in the federal universities, it is regrettable that some state governments have yet to honour the provisions of the agreement despite participating actively in the negotiation process,” he said.
Ibrahim identified the affected institutions as Kaduna State University, Kano University of Science and Technology, Northwest University Kano and Sule Lamido University.
He urged the affected governments to clear all outstanding entitlements and resolve pending issues to ensure lasting industrial peace.
The ASUU official also renewed the union’s demand for the payment of its withheld three-and-a-half months’ salaries and the remittance of outstanding pension contributions and third-party deductions.
He warned that continued delay or selective implementation of the agreement could force the union to embark on industrial action.
“ASUU will not hesitate to deploy all legitimate and constitutionally guaranteed means to protect the rights and welfare of its members if these state governments continue to neglect their obligations,” Ibrahim said.
He also expressed concern over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and economic hardship, urging governments at all levels to take urgent steps to protect lives and improve citizens’ welfare.
