Atiku appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as spokesperson after resolving rift

Former Vice President and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson.

Okonkwo disclosed the appointment in a statement posted on his official X handle on Thursday, thanking Atiku for the confidence reposed in him.

He described the appointment as an opportunity to contribute to the party’s vision ahead of the 2027 general election.

The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo criticised the ADC’s choice of vice-presidential candidate, warning that the decision could further sideline the South-East in national politics.

According to him, subsequent consultations with Atiku and other party leaders addressed his concerns over the region’s interests within the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.

“I give God all the glory for being appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me.

“Rather than taking offence at any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that engender solutions to problems,” Okonkwo said.

He added that discussions with Atiku and other ADC leaders assured him that the interests of the South-East would be protected.

Okonkwo also appreciated Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their support.

He further thanked his family, friends, and supporters for their prayers and encouragement, expressing optimism as he assumes the new role.

Kano Times reports that Atiku recently emerged as the ADC presidential candidate for the 2027 election, while former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, was picked as his running mate.
