The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has suggested to the Federal Government the merger of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) with the police for effectiveness.
Egbetokun made this statement at the National Dialogue on State Policing, organized by the House of Representatives on Monday in Abuja, with the theme “Pathways to Peace: Reimagining Policing in Nigeria”.
The IG, represented by Assistant Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Mr. Ben Okoro, stated that the NSCDC and the FRSC were duplications of the police force.
He noted that the police force was grappling with inadequate training and lack of adequate manpower. Additionally, he pointed out that most police barracks suffered from lack of maintenance and renovation, negatively impacting the performance of policemen.
Egbetokun also criticized calls for state police, arguing that Nigeria was not yet mature enough for such a system.
