MTN Nigeria Plans 100% Increase in Call, Data Tariffs

MTN Nigeria has proposed a 100% increase in its call and data tariffs, according to its Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola.

The proposal has been submitted to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for approval.

Toriola revealed this during an interview on Arise TV, stating, “We’ve put forward requests of approximately 100 percent tariff increases to regulators. I doubt they’re going to approve that quantum of increases because they are very, very sensitive to the current economic situation in the country.”

The development comes amid speculation of a telecom service tariff hike this year, with industry operators citing economic pressures.

Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), recently warned of a potential shutdown of operations if tariffs are not adjusted. However, telecom subscribers have rejected any plans for a price hike.

The NCC has yet to respond to the proposal, leaving the outcome uncertain.
