Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company will discontinue the use of fact-checkers to moderate content on its platforms and will instead implement community notes, a system similar to that used on the rival platform, X.
“We’re going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with community notes, similar to X,” Zuckerberg stated in a video on Tuesday. “We’re gonna get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression on our platforms,” he added.
This marks the latest in a series of sweeping policy changes by Meta, which will significantly alter how content such as posts and videos are moderated on Facebook and Instagram.
Previously, Meta relied heavily on fact-checkers for content moderation, a move that some critics alleged was used to suppress content deemed unfavorable to left-wing ideologies.
The recent appointment of Dana White, a close ally of President-elect Donald Trump and UFC CEO, as a new board member, signals a notable ideological shift within Meta, further indicating the company’s pivot toward the right.
