The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said it has moved beyond the departure of two former presidential candidates, Mr Peter Obi and Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, describing their exit from the party as a temporary setback.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated this on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show.
Abdullahi said the ADC had already stabilised following the defection of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, insisting that the party remained focused on its broader political objectives.
“Peter Obi and Kwankwaso moving from the ADC was a glitch. We have moved on from it,” he said.
Kano Times reports that Obi and Kwankwaso recently defected from the ADC to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), citing internal political wranglings and court cases as reasons for their decision.
According to Abdullahi, the party has since repositioned itself to pursue its agenda of strengthening democratic opposition in the country.
“We have stabilised and moved forward because the objective remains the same, stopping the steady deterioration of governance in the country and strengthening multi-party democracy,” he added.
The ADC spokesman further maintained that despite the movement of some members to other political platforms, efforts to build a formidable opposition coalition were still ongoing.
“While some have moved to other parties and others remain in ADC, the broader vision of building a strong opposition coalition is still very much alive within the current political dynamics,” Abdullahi said.
