The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that there is no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country, urging citizens not to panic but remain vigilant.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance on Thursday during the inaugural meeting of the Communication Sub-Committee of the Presidential Task Force on Ebola Virus Disease Preparedness and Emerging Public Health Threats in Abuja.
Idris said although Nigeria has not recorded any Ebola case, recent outbreaks in parts of Africa underscore the need for preparedness.
“There is currently no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria. However, recent developments elsewhere in Africa remind us that infectious diseases know no borders,” he said.
The minister said President Bola Tinubu’s decision to establish the Presidential Task Force demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians through coordinated preparedness and timely response.
He stressed that accurate and science-based communication would be critical in preventing panic and combating misinformation during any public health emergency.
Idris also noted that the National Orientation Agency, in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), has commenced nationwide public sensitisation, urging Nigerians to maintain good hygiene, report suspected symptoms to health authorities and rely only on verified government information.
He recalled that Nigeria’s successful containment of Ebola in 2014 was driven by strong leadership, coordinated action, effective surveillance and sustained public communication.
