Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has laid the foundation for the construction of a N1.3 billion ultra-modern secondary school at Kaura Goge in Nasarawa Local Government Area of the state.
The project, which is part of the administration’s education reform drive, is expected to replace the deteriorated Maikwatashi School, parts of whose land were reportedly encroached upon and illegally sold by some individuals.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mustapha Muhammad, the governor said the intervention became necessary to restore access to quality education for students in the area.
Governor Yusuf also disclosed that the old Maikwatashi School has been handed over to the Kano State College of Arts and Islamic Studies (CAS) for educational use.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony, the governor said the new school would reduce the burden on students who currently travel long distances, particularly to areas such as Sabon Gari, in search of secondary education.
“There are a huge number of students in this area that had to go to Sabon Gari for schooling, that’s why we want to build a school here,” he said.
He also urged residents to cooperate with the contractor handling the project, while warning that quality and standards must be strictly adhered to.
Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Goni Ali Haruna Makoda, said the project, valued at N1.3 billion, would comprise 32 classrooms, 36 toilets, and four libraries, among other facilities.
Makoda described the project as a fulfilment of the governor’s campaign promise, saying it reflects the administration’s commitment to improving access to education across the state.
