The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected allegations from Niger Republic accusing Nigeria and other member states of sponsoring terrorism.
In a statement issued on Thursday, ECOWAS addressed the claims, stating, “The Commission stands firmly with Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states against allegations that they are sponsoring terrorism.”
The regional body highlighted Nigeria’s role in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in combating terrorism and maintaining security in West Africa. It described Nigeria as a “generous and magnanimous country” involved in peace and security efforts across Africa.
ECOWAS called on member states to prioritize dialogue and avoid accusations without credible evidence.
This comes amid tensions between Nigeria and Niger Republic.
Nigerien military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, accused Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of working with France to destabilize Niger. He alleged that Tinubu accepted financial incentives from France for allowing a French military presence in a specific area of Borno State.
Nigerien authorities also accused the Lakurawa terrorist group, allegedly supported by foreign forces, including Nigeria, of carrying out the December 13, 2024, attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied these claims, asserting its commitment to peaceful relations with Niger Republic.
